Frequently Asked Questions

What layer standards does CAD Translator support?

CAD Translator covers three major standards:

  • NCS (National CAD Standard) — the primary layer naming standard for US architectural and engineering drawings. Full database included.
  • IEC 81346 — equipment reference designations used internationally for electrical systems (generators, motors, transformers, drives).
  • NEC (National Electrical Code) — panel and circuit naming conventions per Articles 690, 706, 712, 700, and 701.

Energy discipline layers (BESS, solar/PV, wind, generator) are also included, covering project types where standard NCS definitions are sparse.

How do I search for a layer?

Tap the search bar and type either a layer code (e.g., V-PROP-CL) or a plain-English description (e.g., "centerline"). Results are scored — exact matches appear first. Use the discipline filter chips (A, C, E, G, …) or the standard filter (NCS / IEC / NEC) to narrow results.

What is a "Custom" layer?

Custom layers are layer definitions you create yourself. You can add brand-new codes that don't exist in any standard, or you can override an existing NCS layer with your firm's version. Overridden layers show a yellow "CUSTOM" badge so you always know which definition is being applied.

What are Definition Packs?

Definition Packs let you group custom layers into a named, versioned bundle — like "Acme Engineering Firm v2.1" or "Solar Project Alpha". Packs include author info and version notes. You can export a pack and share it via AirDrop, email, Slack, or any iOS share-sheet destination. Colleagues import the pack in one tap.

Does CAD Translator require an internet connection?

No. CAD Translator is fully offline. All 500+ built-in layers are stored on-device. Your custom definitions and packs never leave your device unless you explicitly export them. No account, no server, no tracking.

What is included in the free tier vs. Pro?

The full built-in layer database and search are free — no time limit, no cap on lookups. Pro unlocks:

  • Unlimited custom layer definitions
  • Definition Packs (create, export, import)
  • Overriding built-in NCS layers with custom versions

Pro is available as a one-time in-app purchase.

Is CAD Translator available on Android?

Yes — CAD Translator is available on both iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play). Both platforms have feature parity.

I found a layer code that seems wrong. How do I report it?

Email us at support@zima-logistics.com with the layer code and the standard you're referencing. We review all reports and push corrections in the next update.

How do I restore my Pro purchase on a new device?

Open CAD Translator, go to Settings → Restore Purchases. Your App Store or Play Store account is used to verify the purchase — no separate account required.

Can I request a new layer or standard?

Absolutely. Send requests to support@zima-logistics.com with the layer name, code, and the standard document it comes from. User requests drive our roadmap.
